Deus Ex is Coming to Theaters

The cyberpunk video game series will get the big screen treatment from CBS Films.

Video game movies are about to have another opportunity to prove themselves: Deus Ex, the critically-acclaimed series from Eidos and now Square Enix, is now on its way to a theater near you. Eventually. If we're lucky. Maybe. CBS Films is nowhere near production, but they have just acquired the rights to the cyberpunk series, as they announced today (via Coming Soon).

The series is set in a noirish dystopian future, in which cybernetic enhancements have changed every facet of life. In the most recent game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the protagonist is Adam Jensen, a private security officer for a powerful corporation, injured in an attack on the company and needing technological augmentations to survive, who investigates a wide-reaching conspiracy.

If you haven't played it, one look at the game's trailer introduces you to a vast world of scientific advancement, which would no doubt cost a lot of money to translate to the big screen properly. It's something Terry Press, the Co-President of CBS Films, claims to take very seriously. "As is clear from the wild success of the game, Square Enix and Eidos-Montréal know how to exceed their audience's expectations by engineering incredible worlds [...] No one knows 'Human Revolution' like the team that created it and we look forward to working with them from day one to make a film adaptation worthy of the 'Deus Ex' name."

The biggest concern for fans of the game might be the track record of CBS Films, who would be undertaking their most ambitious production to date with Deus Ex. Their biggest screen credits to date include the Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan, the notorious dud Beastly and the upcoming mid-flight horror movie 7500, from the director Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On: The Grudge). Can they pull this off? Time will tell… we hope.

CraveOnline will be back with more Deus Ex news after we fix all the boss fights.
