Ten years ago, Ben Affleck's star was waning. He was on the verge of starring in Gigli, Daredevil and Paycheck, three notorious disappointments that nearly doomed his acting career. Who would have thought that a scant decade later he'd be one of the biggest directors in the industry? Can you imagine ten years ago, anyone from Warner Bros. saying "You know who we should get to direct The Justice League, the biggest tentpole summer movie in our company's history? That Reindeer Games guy. It's a no-brainer."
But that's exactly what's happening according to Variety, which reports that Warner Bros. has given Ben Affleck a copy of Will Beall's now-finished screenplay for the superhero team flick and expects to have a meeting soon regarding his possible involvement. Warner Bros. has been in the Ben Affleck business for a few years now, having produced his Oscar-nominated drama The Town and his upcoming Iran hostage crisis movie Argo, which they have presumably seen already and think well of, since they're offering Affleck, again, what could be the biggest movie release in their long, long history.
It seems like an easy choice for Affleck to make, but it's important to remember that a production this size would take him off the market for several years, and also – as Variety points out – it might not provide Affleck with a role to play himself, something he usually does in his films. With Superman taken by Henry Cavill, Affleck would be left with The Flash, Batman or The Green Lantern (who might still be taken by Ryan Reynolds), all of whom he's arguably too old for. (And of course Wonder Woman, for which he would be a terrible casting choice.) Unless perhaps he could play the villain role, in which case, hey, he'd make a solid Lex Luthor or Maxwell Lord, assuming either of those directions are being considered for The Justice League.
If this deal works out, we expect Warner Bros. to officially announce it soon. If not, which is entirely possible, expect them to scramble to offer the film to whomever their second choice might be.
CraveOnline will be back with more Justice League news after the next crisis.
