Will Ms. Marvel Show Up in The Avengers 2?

Two British actresses are rumored to be up for the role in Marvel's superhero sequel, but is it too early to even think about casting…?

Rumors have begun surfacing that Ms. Marvel, one of Marvel's most popular female superheroes (of admittedly rather few, especially outside the X-Men universe), will be getting the big screen treatment in The Avengers 2. The news comes courtesy of The Daily Mail (via Coming Soon), who announced rather offhandedly that both Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are in contention for the role.

Ms. Marvel, real name Carol Danvers, is an Air Force officer who gained superhuman powers after her genetic makeup was mixed with that of the alien Kree. Her extra-terrestrial origin gives her potential inclusion in The Avengers 2, which is confirmed to feature Thanos the Titan as the primary villain, an air of validity. Further, it would be encouraging to see Marvel Studios expand their line-up of female heroes, considering that, thus far, only Black Widow seems to have made the transition to the big screen in all her be-costumed glory.

But we have trouble believing this rumor, which remains unsubstantiated by anyone in the official Marvel camp, largely due to the timing. The Avengers 2 isn't due in theaters until May 1, 2015, and before that Marvel has at least four movies to focus on: Iron Man 3, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy, and possibly Edgar Wright's long-awaited Ant-Man, time permitting. Unless Marvel Studios is planning to introduce Carol Danvers in one of these films first – most likely Captain America, given her military origins – the odds that they are already casting for a film that's still over two years down the road seems remarkably unlikely.

That said, we do like the idea of casting Ruth Wilson or Emily Blunt in the role. Wilson has had a breakout role in the detective television series "Luther" and will co-star in the upcoming Disney tentpole The Lone Ranger with Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp, and Blunt's been moving into action territory lately with Looper and the upcoming All You Need is Kill. Adding credibility to Blunt's potential involvement is the fact that she was originally in talks to play The Black Widow in Iron Man 2, only to lose the role to Scarlett Johansson when scheduling conflicts arose wth Gulliver's Travels.

CraveOnline will be back with more Avengers 2 news as time goes on and the rumors get increasingly plausible.
