Watch Reclusive Director Terrence Malick… Dance?

The notoriously private director cuts a rug on a break from his latest film.

A few weeks ago I asked a publicist if I could get a 1:1 interview with Terrence Malick for his upcoming drama, To the Wonder. We both had a good laugh about that. Malick may be the visionary director behind Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The New World and The Tree of Life, but he is also one of the most reclusive figures in the film industry. He reportedly makes contractual agreements that his likeness cannot be used to promote his own films, and almost never agrees to be interviewed. So it's kind of unusual to see him dance.

The video, captured on a break from shooting his latest film (still untitled, but set in Austin, TX), shows the critically acclaimed director cutting loose on the dance floor at a local night club. It's a short clip, but somehow that makes the video all the more appropriate. It's the Hollywood equivalent of the famous Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot footage everyone knows and loves.

The clip appeared on YouTube today and was quickly picked up by Vulture and The Huffington Post. We certainly hope that the attention paid to this 13-second clip doesn't upset Malick too much. We'd hate for him to take another twenty year break from filmmaking (the amount of time that passed between his second and third films). Hopefully Malick appreciates that his reclusive nature, combined with his critically-acclaimed films, make this image of the director not only on video but also actually having a bit of fun a rare treat for cinema fans. Sure, he's not doing Gangnam Style or anything, but it somehow feels appropriate to us.

Terrence Malick's next film, To the Wonder, starring Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams, opens in American theaters in April, 2013.
