The DGA Award Nominations Are Here

And the nominees are… extremely predictable!

The last of the big Guild Award nominations have been announced today, and unlike the Producers Guild, the Writers Guild or the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) nominees feature no surprises whatsoever. The rest of the voting bodies found it in their hearts to include surprise nominations for genre fare like Skyfall and Looper, or at least pimped the hell out of largely forgotten films like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The DGA nominees are the frontrunners for the Best Director Academy Award, and they're very conventional choices at that.

Ben Affleck has received his first DGA nomination for the political/Hollywood insider thriller Argo, but the rest of the nominees have all won DGA Awards before, often multiple times. Their films are considered locks for a Best Picture nomination, and they themselves perhaps a shoe-in for Best Director nods. While it would be nice to report surprises at the DGAs, or the Oscars (which will announce their nominations on Thursday, January 10), the DGA nominees should perhaps be viewed as a reminder that, in the end, the winners of these awards tend to be very conventional choices, and usually are the frontrunners in their fields.
