Han Solo and Boba Fett Will Get Their Own Movies

A Han Solo origin story, set between Episodes III and IV, and a Boba Fett story set during the original trilogy.

Wow, that article we wrote about Star Wars Characters Who Deserve Their Own Movie was relevant for all of one parsec, wasn't it? Well, at least our #1 made the cut…

Yes, one day after officially confirming that they're making Star Wars spin-offs featuring some of the original, popular characters in the franchise comes word from Entertainment Weekly that the first two films being developed are based on Han Solo, the roguish smuggler originally played by Harrison Ford, and Boba Fett, the bounty hunter who froze Han Solo in carbonite at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. Boba Fett was originally played by Jeremy Bulloch, but is now known to be a clone of another bounty hunter, Jango Fett, played by Temuera Morrison. We imagine Morrison could be pursuaded to return as Boba Fett, particularly since the character never takes his helmet off, but casting a young Harrison Ford, particularly in one of the the most iconic movie characters of all time, is probably going to be a real bitch, and invited untold piles of fan scrutiny.

The story, which is quick to remind us that development is still early and plans could change, indicated that the Han Solo movie would take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and feature the origin of the character. The Boba Fett movie appears to be a stand-alone adventure set between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or possibly The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, even though the whereabouts of Boba Fett during that time period are pretty clearly inferred. Alas, the Boba Fett movie does not appear inclined to show Boba Fett crawling out of that stupid Sarlacc pit he got accidentally bumped into (sigh…) at the end of Return of the Jedi. The films are set to be written by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past), although which writer is developing which particular movie is yet unknown. We imagine that Kasdan probably has first dibs on Han Solo, however, having worked with the character so prominently before, but that's just speculation.

Besides Darth Vader, Han Solo and Boba Fett are perhaps the two most popular characters in the entire Star Wars mythos (and unlike Darth Vader, they emerged from the prequel trilogy with their reputations more-or-less unscathed), so it makes perfect sense that this is the direction Disney is going with. It makes a lot more sense than that Yoda rumor, although we see nothing in this new story that explicit denies the green guy will get his own flick somewhere down the line. And since these films take place before or during the original trilogy, it is at least plausible that Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt, Emperor Palpatine and even Lando Calrissian could make an appearance in these spin-offs as well.

More news as it develops…
