What does it take to make a whole movie set inside a box? It takes long strips of blacked out film, Ryan Reynolds in the box and a crazy director. By his own admission, Rodrigo Cortes is that guy. At the premiere of Buried in Austin for Fantastic Fest, Cortes pled insanity as he walked the red carpet.

CraveOnline: You really test the audience with the opening segment of black. How did you figure out how long you could push it?

Rodrigo Cortes: I didn’t think of that. I actually didn’t think at all. Actually, if you think, you don’t do a movie like this. It’s better not to use common sense. I simply thought it was the logical way to start because I wanted this to be a physical experience and I wanted everybody to experience exactly what he experiences. It wasn’t a trick. It was right. I wanted to start in this very intense and raw way so you perfectly know from the very beginning what you’re going to see.

CraveOnline: Do you think there could be a series of films where different people are buried in different situations or environments?

Rodrigo Cortes: I hope not. I mean, that you can do a movie inside a fridge and another one inside a wardrobe, but probably that wouldn’t make sense. We could do the sequel called Cremated.

CraveOnline: I would pitch you Buried in Ice.

Rodrigo Cortes: Yeah, Buried in Ice, that makes perfect sense.

CraveOnline: How do you keep the surprise of the ending when audiences may figure out there’s only a few different ways this could turn out?

Rodrigo Cortes: Well, actually I don't know how to keep the surprise but it seems that it’s working. When we see crowded theaters, they’re like an army reacting in perfect synchronization at the same time, gasping at the same time, yelling at the same time.
