Steve-O goes in to the 3rd dimension

The Jackass 3-D star talks sobriety and stunts.

Steve-O is a changed man for Jackass 3-D. He’s cleaned up and gotten soda, admirably drinking a bottle of water at the Jackass beer garden event at San Diego Comic Con. Steve-O starred in the main stunt they previewed in the garden, the Poo Cocktail Supreme. Interviewing him, he actually talked about more profound issues than flying outhouses.

Crave Online: How did you commemorate the anniversary of your sobriety with a Jackass stunt?

Steve-O: I don't know that we celebrated it in the movie but while we were filming it, yeah, I celebrated two years. Two and a half years now. I don't know, like how did I commemorate? I guess I just stayed sober another day, you know.

Crave Online: Is it more fun to do these stunts sober?

Steve-O: Stuff that’s painful has always been painful. I don't know that it was that much different. Scary has always been scary. I don't think any of us have ever been really visibly loaded while we were shooting Jackass. So I don't know that anything was terribly different but what was drastically different was being able to show up as an improved version of myself. I was so much easier to get along with, so much more eager to work. It was a real blessing, man. These guys put up with a lot of garbage from me over the years and I got to kind of make up for that a little bit so it was awesome. I’m really grateful for it.

Crave Online: What sort of pain did you put yourself through this time?

Steve-O: There’s plenty of sh*t. My approach to Jackass this time around was I’d rather regret something that I did rather than regret something that I didn’t do. In the second one, if I thought maybe it wouldn’t make the movie, that’ll wind up on the cutting room floor, that was a reason for me not to do stuff. This time around, I just did everything. If stuff’s not in the movie that I did, it’s on the cutting room floor as opposed to nowhere.

Crave Online: Did you think of stunts differently being in 3-D?

Steve-O: Some stuff, yeah. Some stuff we would have thought of anyway. It seems kind of natural since we know it’s 3-D, I’ll have to do it this way as opposed to another way. We played everything for 3-D for sure.

Crave Online: Do you think it’s an inspiration that you guys survive so much waste and piercing and pounding?

Steve-O: Yeah, it’s not in our nature to take steps backwards. It’s been really scary to go to work.

Crave Online: Did you put any new holes in yourself?

Steve-O: Yeah, feel right here. That’s a bee bee in there.

Crave Online: They couldn’t get it out?

Steve-O: Maybe they could but…

Crave Online: What other big stunts do you do in Jackass 3-D?

Steve-O: I don’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone. The recurring thing for me is what makes it work is that we’re all getting along, we’re all having a good time. There’s really a wide range of emotions but we work well together.

Crave Online: Are you surprised that going Hollywood hasn’t ruined Jackass?

Steve-O: I don't think so, man. We’ve got our own approach.

Crave Online: Were you able to go anywhere you’d never gotten to go before?

Steve-O: We shot in snow up in Lake Tahoe. I hadn’t done any of that before.

Crave Online: Are you fully clothed in the snow?

Steve-O: I can’t tell you the stuff we did.
