Before we’d seen Saw VI, Costas Mandylor couldn’t tell us what happens in the movie. He didn’t even know if he lived or died. Now we know the fate of Jigsaw’s muscle, Hoffman, so we can present our exclusive interview with Mandylor for reflection.
Crave Online: In Saw IV, it was a big surprise how integral Hoffman turned out to be. In V he was covering up the whole time. Is VI the first time you really get to let loose?
Costas Mandylor: Well, I’m kind of chasing my own tail in VI because people are starting to catch on, or having a little thought that there’s something wrong with me. So it’s just triple heavier than V for me.
Crave Online: Is there more for you to do?
Costas Mandylor: Yeah, I got lucky. There’s a lot of stuff that I do and I’m basically covering my own tracks because of V and how it ends.
Crave Online: Do you have to play Hoffman differently now?
Costas Mandylor: No, it’s basically the same thing but just a little bit more desperate.
Crave Online: Desperation isn’t usually something that comes into Jigsaw’s plan.
Costas Mandylor: Well, unfortunately the master, Tobin Bell’s character, Jigsaw passed the baton to me and I think I’m not as mature as him, so I get myself into a little trouble in this one.
Crave Online: Is Hoffman fit to carry Jigsaw’s legacy?
Costas Mandylor: Well, Jigsaw’s not stupid, right? He handed me the reigns so I guess he thinks I’m worthy. We’ll find out in this movie.
Crave Online: Well, it means a lot, not only to Jigsaw but his fans, to have someone carry out his work.
Costas Mandylor: Well, the fans are very specific and very demanding and they won’t accept anything less. So far I’ve been approved. In this movie they’ll either go, “Kill him” or “Live forever.”
Crave Online: I love the idea that Jigsaw’s message is spreading. How does Hoffman help it spread?
Costas Mandylor: Well, I pay heed to his advise and I’m carrying the torch so to speak. In this movie, I don't know how it ends because we shot different endings. Other than that, I’m not sure what’s going to happen. The torch could very well die, but I’m doing my best.
Crave Online: Is Hoffman still breaking some of Jigsaw’s rules, like making unwinnable traps?
Costas Mandylor: Yeah, he’s still breaking the rules.
