Oceans Thirteen

Cast: Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Elliot Gould, Al Pacino, Don Cheadle, Bernie Mack, Andy Garcia
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Rating: PG-13
Plot: A revenge caper this time around, as Danny Ocean and his crew get a little payback after one of their own is double crossed.
Why: Al Pacino is added to an already talented line up. The plot seems pretty tight, and it looks like the movie is leaning towards its original roots
Why Not: The second movie was suspect, so much in fact that a sequel didn’t seem that likely. It will be interesting to see if movie goers will be enticed to take a chance on another movie.

Hostel Part II

Cast: Lauren German, Roger Bart, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips, Richard Burgi, Vera Jordanova, Jay Hernandez, Jordan Ladd.
Director: Eli Roth
Rating: R
Plot: Three women are tricked into staying at a Hostel where they are then tortured.
Why: Fans of the first movie will likely enjoy this second installment. The movie has beautiful women and gore, horror fans should be lining up.
Why Not: It seems like these days writers think of interesting ways to kill, maim, and torture people, and then they write a story that includes all those ideas. I’m not sure if this is the best way to really tell a story, plus people might be put off by the gore.

Surf’s Up

Cast: Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder, James Woods, Diedrich Bader, Mario Cantone, Kelly Slater.
Director(s): Ash Brannon, Chris Buck
Rating: PG
Plot: Apparently, penguins invented surfing, and the movie is set up as a mock documentary about their championship surfing event.
Why: Ever since ‘Happy Feet’ and the ‘March of the Penguins’ it seems that companies can’t go wrong where the cute little creatures are concerned. Plus Kelly Slater is featured in the film, surf fans should rejoice.
Why Not: Here’s hoping that the whole penguin thing has not been beaten to death. There are a ton of CGI based movies hitting theatres this summer, let’s hope this one doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

Cast: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Doug Jones, Julian McMahon, Kerry Washington, Laurence Fishburne
Director: Tim Story
Rating: N/A
Plot: The first family of Marvel Comics is back for another go round. This time the team deals with Galactus, devourer of worlds, and his herald The Silver Surfer.
Why: The first movie set up the origin angle and got that completely out of the way. So this movie might be promising. Plus, there’s Jessica Alba, and that’s never a bad thing (sorry Chiklis).
Why Not: The first movie was horrid. It takes a lot of guts to make a sequel after such a bad start. This movie has a lot to overcome.

Captivity
.jpg)
Cast: Elisha Cuthbert, Daniel Gillies, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Laz Alonso, Michael Harney, Rebekah Ryan
Director: Roland Joffe
Rating: R
Plot: Cuthbert play’s a famous model that is abducted and held captive by a psychopath.
Why: Well, this is a men’s website so let’s be honest, Elisha Cuthbert is smokin’ hot, and in this movie. Sure there are plenty of other reasons for seeing this movie, like the director Roland Joffe (The Mission, Super Mario Brothers). Cuthbert has made a TV career out of being victimized.
Why Not: I think we already saw this movie, like twice. How many times will this idea be repackaged as something new? There are enough films like this to justify a sub genre; this might make this movie seem almost run of the mill.

Cast: Steve Carell, Lauren Graham, Jimmy Bennett, Johnny Simmons, Morgan Freeman
Director: Tom Shadyac
Rating: PG
Plot: Freeman reprises his role as GOD and this time has asked Evan (Steve Carell) to build an arc in preparation for another great flood.
Why: Steve Carell definitely has the chops to do physical comedy. The plot itself seems to set itself apart from the original film quite nicely. This movie looks to be good.
Why Not: The jury is still out on whether or not Carell can carry a movie all by his lonesome. Also, the movie might rely too heavily on his antics and sight gags. The first movie wasn’t the greatest in the world by any means so we’ll have to just wait and see about this one.

Live Free or Die Hard

Cast: Bruce Willis, Timothy Olyphant, Maggie Q, Justin Long, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Cyril Rafaelli
Director: Len Wiseman
Rating: PG-13 (seriously)
Plot: A plot to cripple the world’s economic system can only be foiled by hard-nosed cop, John McClane.
Why: It’s Die Hard man! Explosions, car chases, shoot outs, and more explosions. There should be some cursing involved as well. John McClane has become an enduring American action hero.
Why Not: PG-13? This dog might be missing its teeth this time around. This movie series has been about unspeakable violence and bloodshed since the beginning, and this strange rating may convince some fans to pass it up.

Director: Judd Apatow
Rating: R
Plot: A Joe ‘every man’ type lands a woman who should be way out of his league for a one night stand. She ends up pregnant, and of course, chaos ensues.
Why: Apatow has a great track record so far, he has a strong cast behind him thankfully (Lindsay Lohan was up for Heigl’s role), and the subject is something that many of us can relate to on some level. Did we mention that Katherine Heigl is hot? Ok, now we did.
Why Not: Heigl is not that damn hot. If this movie sucks, her looks won’t save it. Because of the activities taking place in the film, this might qualify it as nothing more than a better than average stoner flick.

Cast: Nathan Meister, Danielle Mason, Peter Feeney, Tammy Davis, Glenis Levestam, Tandi Wright, Oliver Driver, Matthew Chamberlain
Director: Jonathan King
Rating: N/A
Plot: A science experiment goes horribly wrong (isn’t that always the way) and unleashes killer sheep on a small New Zealand town.
Why: Just read the plot again, who doesn’t want to see blood thirsty zombie sheep terrorize a small town in New Zealand? If you like movies like Shaun of the Dead, then this one is right up your alley.
Why Not: When I asked who didn’t want to see a movie about zombie sheep, many people probably raised their hands. This idea might seem like too much of a novelty for most American movie goers to spend their money on. It seems like this movie might become a cult favorite, but not necessarily a commercial success.

Cast: Jayne Eastwood, Dennis Farina, Philip Baker Hall, Scott Heindl, Ben Kingsley, Tea Leoni, Bill Pullman, Luke Wilson
Director: John Dahl
Rating: R
Plot: Ben Kingsley portrays a hitman who winds up working in a funeral with a woman who was related to one of his victims. He’s called back into the mob life with her in tow.
Why: The cast list looks awesome for this kind of dark comedy. Ben Kingsley just isn’t known for bad movies, and is more than good at being funny.
Why Not: This movie might remind too many people of films like ‘Gross Pointe Blank’ and turn them off, not that that movie was bad, but that it’s been done before. The audience might be tired of yet another funny mob comedy.
