The Third G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer is Here

Did Paramount use the film's nine month delay to add more Channing Tatum scenes?

"As your good friend, you need a new catchphrase."

G.I. Joe: Retaliation was supposed to come out on June 29, 2012, but in late May, with barely a month to go, Paramount delayed the release nine months to March 29, 2013. The studio's official reason was that they had decided to post-convert their big action blockbuster to 3D at the last minute. Rumors swirled that they were anxious about the film's lack of Channing Tatum, who starred in the original G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, who was rumored to die in the first act of Retaliation, and who had risen to new heights of stardom shortly before the film's scheduled release, thanks to hits like The Vow and Magic Mike. Could the delay have been an excuse to add more Tatum scenes?

So we're looking at this new trailer, courtesy of Yahoo!, pretty closely. For the most part, it seems to contain similar content to what we've seen in earlier previews. Ninja mountain fight? Check. Evil President of the United States? Check. A scene with Channing Tatum, taking place after the initial devastating attack on the heroes, in which Tatum says something funny that's completely unrelated to the story, that only calls attention to the fact that he's absent from all the actual action scenes in the trailer? That's a big, big check. Maybe there was something to that rumor after all. Then again, unless somone speaks up, we may never know with 100% certainty.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation stars Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Ray Park, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, Jonathan Pryce and Channing Tatum, and it hits theaters March 29, 2013.
