Guillermo Del Toro Does a Commentary for the Pacific Rim Trailer

The director of the giant robot vs. giant monster movie gives you a shot-by-shot description of what each moment means.

"In all seriousness, I love this trailer, but it's like the trailer for Howard's End next to what the movie is going to deliver."

If you got as much of a kick out of the first Pacific Rim trailer, which just premiered this week online, you're probably aching for more. As said when it premiered, Pacific Rim is probably the biggest original movie blockbuster on the horizon, one that isn't based on an existing book, comic book, movie, TV show or what have you, so unlike the trailers for, say, Star Trek Into Darkness or Man of Steel, we don't have an existing awareness of its contents other than a tacit awareness that it looks like a big budget live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie. The trailer simply looks cool, even if we have no idea exactly what we're looking at.

Coming to the rescue is MTV, which has recorded a commentary track for the trailer with the film's director Guillermo Del Toro, who is more than happy to explain where certain shots in the movie take place, how the giant robots – called "Jaegers" – work, whether or not we ever look inside that portal to another dimension, and what happens after the giant monsters – called "Kaiju" - are defeated.

We suppose there could be some minor spoilers in here, since there is definitely a lot of information Del Toro reveals that can't be gleaned from the trailer alone, but if the director of the movie is comfortable telling the world about these things seven months before the movie's release on July 12, 2013, we suppose they're not worth getting fussy about.

Enjoy!
