Toronto Black Film Festival Releases Line-up

TBFF will launch next month.

The 1st annual Toronto Black Film Festival (TBFF) is premiering next month at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, with the film "Nairobi Half Life" out of Kenya kicking things off on opening night.

TBFF will showcase the most outstanding and most powerful black films while creating a space to debate major cultural, social and socio-economic issues. The event is an offshoot of the Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF), which has enjoyed eight successful years. It was founded by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, a not-for-profit, professional, artistic organization dedicated to promoting cinema, art and culture in Canada and abroad.

“I don’t think this is just another film festival. I think this is a necessary film festival,” Colas, president and founder of both TBFF and the Montreal International Film Festival, said during a press conference Tuesday (as reported by The National Post). “It’s the necessary film festival to tell stories that are not often heard, to show films that are not often seen, to give voice to people that don’t get to talk through their films or a panel discussion.”

A number of films as well as activities are planned for the event. The Toronto Black Film Festival runs from February 13-17.
