![]() By Aaron Seaney | February finally came to an end, and after all the quality movies that I saw I really expected Semi-Pro to end us with a huge bang, and yet once it was all said and done, I found it kind of flat (pun totally intended). |
I’m not going to lie; I have come very accustomed to Will Ferrell’s typical cocky attitude and hilarious character and in Semi-Pro it was a character he had decided to tame just enough to annoy me. The story of Semi-Pro is about basketball team owner and power forward Jackie Moon, and his idea to get into the NBA during the merger. The top 4 teams go into the NBA after the merger, and the Tropics are in last place. The funniest parts of the movie lie within the acting, but yet it falls short because of the story.
The Acting: Even though Will Ferrell tamed his character down to the point of almost unfunny the fact remains that he is Will freaking Ferrell and that you will laugh at least 3 times in any movie he does. With that being said, he shares the scene in this movie with fellow acting giant Woody Haralson, and surprising up and comer Andre 3000, honestly with every movie I see this guy in I start to like him more and more. Unfortunately however the acting isn’t quite good enough to save a story that honestly just kind of lacks its usual humor.
The Story: The greatest thing about Will Ferrell movies is that they are never serious about anything, but sadly this is not the case with Semi-Pro, now granted the whole premise of the movie is them trying to get to 4th place, which in and of itself is hilarious, but about half way through the movie, they try and turn it into an actual sports movie, with montages and everything, making the movie fall flat on its face, and turning borderline boring.
Overall: The movie took a gamble and tried something different, sadly some gambles shouldn’t be taken and this was one of them. If you are a huge Will Ferrell fan like I am, head to this movie expecting to be slightly disappointed. But honestly I would rather spend my money elsewhere right now.
