Sometimes I forget how enduring the ‘teen comedy’ genre has become since maybe Gidget in the 50’s. Like a lot of people my age, I have a list of personal favorite ‘teen’ movies that I still think were great in retrospect, but at this stage in my adulthood I’d would have figured that I was over the whole genre, that the last ‘Pie‘ movie was it for me, that the last slew of really sad parody movies had proved it. Then along comes this weird ass movie titled Superbad (I’ve seen the movie and to be honest I’m still not sure why, unless it’s only for the song playing at the end of the movie), when I say weird, I really mean how the movie looks on the billboard as I drive by, all I think when I see that is, “what the hell?” Well, I’ll tell me what the hell, this is one damn funny movie.

Micheal Cera and Jonah Hill as Evan and Seth

The two star’s of Superbad (Jonah Hill as Seth and Michael Cera as Evan), along with their faithful sidekick Fogell (Chris Plasse), work well together to create a slew of hysterical comedic situations as movie goers watch these kids try their best to get it together on what is to be their final night as high schoolers. To tell you too much more than that would be unfair to the movie because you really should go out and see it. The movie has so many great elements and memorable moments that I’m almost sure that you will find something you like. If physical comedy is your thing, then this movie has plenty, with a great bit of it placed so precisely that the audience is just blown away. The dialogue is classic and will have you repeating lines you heard from the movie to other people and totally f**king it up for them, oh well at least you tried right?

Bill Hader and Seth Rogen as Officer Slater and Officer Michaels

Seth Rogan (co-writer) shows up as one half of a pair of police officers in the film. The side adventure that he and his partner lead you on keeps the movie fresh and entertaining. The relationships between the characters had a genuine feeling that made me wonder how the movie was going to end, because after a while, everything that these guys went through, no matter how bizarre, seemed feasible, and the characters that much more ‘real’ because of it. I won’t give it away, but I felt the ending satisfied me in the end (?). It worked out the way it had to, ya know? You don’t know do you? Here I thought that I was all done with the cinematic ilk of ‘Sixteen Candles’. Who the hell told Judd Apatow to produce a ‘teen’ movie?  Well he did, and I’m really glad I saw it; it’s a well made movie.
