Jerry Ferrera broke from his Entourage gang at a party for HBO at Beverly Hills’ swank W hotel. Poolside, he searched for a place to smoke a cigarette. Too close to the pool, there were flammable tanks. Unlike his character, Turtle, he did not mack on any ladies. One look at the brunette by his side and you wouldn’t look anywhere else either. Besides, when you can hang with the Entourage, who needs babes?
CraveOnline: How do you survive in LA as a smoker?
Jerry Ferrera: You know what? It’s actually very motivating to quit. I’ve quit probably 75 times in the last six months. Nah, you know what? L.A.’s not a smoke friendly place which is good because I really want to quit. It gets me a little upset when I’m smoking outside and people throw you dirty looks. It’s one thing if I’m lighting a cigarette inside, I would understand, but if I’m waling outside… I don’t smoke in front of kids, I don’t smoke in front of babies. People get very offended.
CraveOnline: How many times have you seriously tried to quit?
Jerry Ferrera: A lot. The last time I actually tried to quit though, I went three months without a cigarette. I was feeling great and unfortunately, it hooked me back again. It’s horrible. It’s a disgusting, filthy habit.
CraveOnline: It seemed like Turtle was coming into his own starting his music representation business. Has he given up on that or could it come back as a subplot?
Jerry Ferrera: It could definitely come back. He hasn’t personally given up on it. I think he was a little maybe discouraged after the whole Saigon incident happened, but I know the direction Doug Ellin wants to take the character is more along those lines of becoming more independent but it’s a fine line because you can’t have him get too far away from the guys. The show is called Entourage. It’s not called Music Manager so you can’t have him get too far away from his boys.
CraveOnline: How do you feel about the direction of this season with the guys putting themselves on the line?
Jerry Ferrera: I love it. I think that everything can’t always be roses all of the time. They kind of have been for Vince up until this year. Everything’s always had a funny way of working out like Aquaman and all that stuff. I think this season you’re really seeing Vince and Eric lay it all on the line which in turn affects Drama and Turtle very much. I like the way the show is right now. I like the fact that he’s kind of taken his destiny into his own hands. It’s a project we’ve been talking about since the first season, Medellin, so I think it’s fantastic.
CraveOnline: Has your journey with success in Hollywood reflected Turtle’s, or even Vince’s since you’re an actor?
Jerry Ferrera: Not really reflected but I have learned a couple of mini-lessons within the show from real life. It kind of has mirrored certain things in the business. So I have learned but it hasn’t been a direct reflection.
CraveOnline: What lessons have you learned?
Jerry Ferrera: Just that you really have to believe in your work. Whatever you’re working on, if your heart’s not in it, don’t even bother. It’s not always about the money all the time. Sometimes, you’ve just got to be true to yourself and remember where you came from, which is the biggest lesson from the show. My friends do a good job of reminding me and my girlfriend does a great job of reminding me where I came from.
CraveOnline: Have you been getting lucrative movie offers for the hiatuses?
Jerry Ferrera: They’ve been pretty good. At this point, I want to show people I can do more than just the character of Turtle. I feel like I could play guys like that at any point and those offers do come and stuff like that. I’m kind of searching out something that’s really different. Nothing has really jumped out at me where I’ve been like wow. So luckily I’m in a position where I can wait for the right thing to come.
CraveOnline: Will there be any cliffhanger with Turtle this year?
Jerry Ferrera: Not so much. This season is very, very devoted to the Medellin movie and the whole Pablo Escobar story. In terms of Turtle, he’s a secondary character in this whole plot.
CraveOnline: In Season Four, do you still learn things about Turtle?
Jerry Ferrera: Oh yeah. I think he was the most underdeveloped character at this point, especially when you have so many characters to deal with at one time. They all come along slowly. I think last year he started to come into his own but I still don’t know what the guy’s real name is, stuff like that. I’m sure there’s a lot more to learn about the character.
CraveOnline: That’s right, they never said.
Jerry Ferrera: They haven’t said it on the show or to me in real life, so I have no idea.
CraveOnline: Guys are jealous of the party world on the show. Do women really throw themselves at stars like that in real life?
Jerry Ferrera: No. I think we exaggerate a little bit but also, I don't know what life is like for someone like the major gigantic stars. I’m sure it does happen, so I think we kind of just took that and ran with that a little bit. That’s almost like the stereotype of Hollywood. I can’t speak on that really. I don't know. I’m not a big party guy. I don’t go out. I’ve never seen it.
CraveOnline: What could a normal guy do to improve his game?
Jerry Ferrera: You know what? Confidence I guess. If you’re just confident, I think it could work. It took me 10 years to get her so I’m not really a good guy to ask. I don’t really have much game.
CraveOnline: It’s obviously a fantasy. I get that.
Jerry Ferrera: Absolutely, that’s the point. You want people to just watch it for a half hour, forget what’s going on in their lives whether it’s good or bad, just lock in and laugh and have a good time for a half hour. That’s the point of the show.
CraveOnline: What do you and your friends do for a good time?
Jerry Ferrera: Any time we just get together, very much like the guys on the show, endless ball busting. We’re all big into sports. We were athletes growing up, so go to games. Anything. Just being around those guys is a fun night to me. If we just go out to dinner and bullshit, it’s a good night.
CraveOnline: Who’s in your entourage right now?
Jerry Ferrera: I don’t really have an entourage. I think entourage is just a fancy word for good friends. All my good friends, I have good friends out here but the kids I grew up with live back in Brooklyn. I don’t get to see them as much as I would like to so it’s tough, along with my family of course.
CraveOnline: How often do you get back?
Jerry Ferrera: Two or three times a year. Every Christmas, usually once in the summer and we usually have a big New York premiere so three times a year.
CraveOnline: How much do the four of you from the show hang out?
Jerry Ferrera: We hang out a lot. We work together so much for like nine months of the year so we have to be together a lot. That’s the thing, when we’re not working, that’s when we actually do still stay in contact so it makes it a lot better. We’re also really, really good friends. If we weren’t good friends in real life, I don't think it would translate on screen.
CraveOnline: Do you have any idea what’s in store for Season Five?
Jerry Ferrera: Honestly, no idea. No idea. I know Doug Ellin is off on vacation somewhere. When we wrap, everybody just kind of winds down. I have no idea what’s in store for season five. Hopefully there is going to be a season five.
CraveOnline: Maybe the music thing?
Jerry Ferrera: I think so. It’s kind of hard to speculate but I think that definitely could come back into play.
