With both Punch-Out and Bionic Commando being revitalized this week for a brand new generation, it left us wondering: what other 8-bit classics could stand an updated modern entry? Retro gaming has seen a renaissance as of late, due mostly in thanks to the glory that is WiiWare and Xbox LIVE Arcade. These platforms serve as a cheaper alternative to full-on retail releases for game developers and publishers to re-work some of their classic (or, not-so-classic) games of old. While a successful retail release is always desired, some updated games may not be suited for a $60 game, but their basics should nonetheless be represented in the modern era. Without further ado:
10. Captain Skyhawk

Anyone remember this game? No? Well that's a shame, because it kicked ass. Developed by Rare and published by Milton Bradley, the 8-bit original pitted you as a fighter pilot charged with fighting back an alien invasion of Earth. The game had an isometric POV and a linear progression that saw you battle other planes, alien rockets, and a plethora of other space junk. There were missions where you had to deliver packages, rescue scientists, and just plain blow shit up. In between levels, there were sub-levels that took a Top Gun approach, and still others that made you dock at a space station that was totally impossible - at least when you were 7. The game also featured a customizable upgrade system that ranged from upgrading your primary cannon, to the amount of missiles you could carry.
What we envision for a modern update is a happy medium between the classic isometric view and the more traditional air combat of something like the Ace Combat series. The storyline should stay completely intact, complete with kidnapped scientists and gigantic alien bases. Where the game could really excel in the modern era is in its application of the customizable fighter plane. I'm not sure that Rare holds any stake in this title, but imagine their application of the basic customization concept of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts applied to a Captain Skyhawk update. I'm not suggesting realism (that's no fun), but the ability to create and modify the most badass fighter jet to ward off alien combatants is too exciting to ignore.
