Therefore it's the job of this column to round up the best, most awesome news in the gaming industry, the stuff that makes us excited to be gamers, and condense it into one eatable, bite-size tablet of awesome. So open wide, this pill gets inserted straight up the back-end..
Aiming to change gaming forever, OnLive has arrived!
Now this is pretty intense. A new service called OnLive was unveiled at the GDC this weekend that could indeed change the way gamers game. No longer would we have to rush out to buy the latest Playstation or Xbox, all we would need is an internet connection, the OnLive service software and then you're ready to stream games. OnLive also aims to release top tier titles the same day they hit retail shelves. Such publishers as Electronic Arts, Take-Two, Ubisoft, and Atari have already signed on. However, expecting titles such as Mario, Zelda, Killzone, Halo, and Gears of War would seem foolish as those are the games Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have as leverage to keep their systems afloat if OnLive does indeed take off.
And the best part of OnLive is that users don't even need high-end PCs to run the most powerful of games. All that's needed is a high speed internet connection and an adequate pc for streaming and the OnLive server does the rest of the work transmitting the game via compression technologies. Check out this video of OnLive streaming Crysis Wars on a mid-range level PC.
Pretty impressive huh?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Teaser
Not a whole lot revealed here but if you're a fan of Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat then I'm sure you're jazzed up for the sequel, also marking Infinity Ward's return to their beloved war franchise. Check out the teaser below.
Original CoD dropping into PSN, XBLA
Sticking with the Call of Duty news--the original Call of Duty is headed to the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network. Originally a PC exclusive it should be interesting to play this classic with an Xbox or Playstation controller. I consider this one of the best shooters ever so it's going to be awesome revisiting it.
All Aboard for the new Zelda on DS!
WOO WOO! Conductor Link has arrived! Ok, this game looks both hilarious and awesome. Glad they ditched the endless seas and boating in favor of something a bit more...grounded. Haven't played much DS lately but this is almost a guaranteed must-buy. Check out this trailer for now and expect Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks to ship later this year!
Uncharted 2 - Leaked Footage
I absolutely cannot wait for this game. I eat up any screenshots that hit the internet and outside of the trailers Naughty Dog has released, this is the first real footage of the game in action. Even with the shitty shaky cam job, you can see Uncharted 2 looks beautiful. It also continues the fluid gun-play and platforming fans of the series expect. The only new addition to game-play I can see from this trailer is the ability to slide into cover which is pretty cool, though I bet that hurts like hell for Nate. Check out the footage below.
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Footage Demoed
Batman has seen a lot of video games. Batman has also seen a lot of terrible video games. However, the developers at Rocksteady and Eidos are looking to change that. Judging from the trailers that have been released, and the latest developer's demo from this past weekend's GDC, this could be the definitive Batman video game. The game definitely looks like Batman, and from what we see in this "Silent Predator" demo, it definitely plays like him too. Fingers crossed everyone. This could be it.
Killzone 2 patch forthcoming
The latest patch, v. 1.21, for Killzone 2 is being released this week. Of all the games I've played recently, Killzone 2 stands out as the most needing of some bandaging. The controls were awkward and with the first patch Guerrilla Games began to remedy that. It seems the latest patch will also tweak the controls a bit and hopefully make Killzone feel natural to control. Also nice to see GG continuing to fix the disconnect problem plaguing the game as there is nothing more frustrating than investing a half hour to an online ranked match only to be disconnected and get no experience. At this point, the fear of that happening is almost a game breaker and makes me nervous to even play. Here is a full list of the patch fixes.
Bionic Commando - Japanese Trailer
Bionic Commando has a huge fanbase. And while I can't say I'm one of the die-hards, I am looking forward to this sequel. Here is the Japanese trailer for the game which makes it look very exciting and cinematic.
God of War III - Footage
Some more leaked footage from the GDC, this time for God of War III. People are frothing at the mouth over this game so any videos of the game in motion warrant instant news. Though this video doesn't really show off anything we haven't seen already--once again showcasing Kratos' ability to ride a troll like a bucking bronco. But to be fair, this is actual game-play instead of scripted cinematic, so feast on.
