NYCC '09: MadWorld Demo Impressions
NYCC
Get gory and stylish with MadWorld on the Wii.

How about that MadWorld coming out for the Wii?? Right? You hard core gamers want some slaughter, you want some madness, you want some beauty and you want some style for your tiny, white console? Yea, me too.

All of that stuff, all of it, comes through in Sega’s MadWorld. MadWorld is a third person, violent action title being developed for the Wii exclusively by Platinum Games. The title is being created by Atsushi Inaba and Shigenori Nishikawa; Inaba was behind Viewtiful Joe and Okami as the CEO of Clover.

There’s a lot of creative and successful muscle back there in those Japanese minds, and they really stretched the possibilities of the Wii’s audience by running with the concept of MadWorld. ‘What IS the concept of MadWorld?,’ you ask?

MadWorld is about one man, Jack, and his struggle in Varrigan City. The city has been taken over by a group of terrorists known as The Organizers. These guys have basically turned the city-scape into a giant, violent television show. Cameras are everywhere, and from my short time with the demo, I could tell that Jack was trying to work his way out of the city itself.

With the NYCC build, I was able to control Jack in a small portion of the city. My goal was to, basically, slaughter for style points. You can pick up objects and use them as weapons. And there’s a lot to be grabbed and applied. My favorite move was grabbing a tire, using it to trap enemies by throwing it over their heads and pinning their arms to their wastes, then grabbing a pole and jamming it through their heads. Yes, you can do it, and it’s been advertised in trailers and media as being such. And, yes, it is.

And in a goofy, non-serious sort of way, it feels pretty awesome. The black and white color scheme coupled with the obviously inhuman pallete of presentation take this game about as far away from believable as possible. That’s what makes it so good, the game is obviously a game, it’s meant to entertain. So while MadWorld has been slammed out of places like Germany for being too violent, I’d like to stress that this violence is nothing more than something you’d see in Looney Toons. Yes, it’s got a little more blood…… as blood is the only thing in color, but HELL, that’s it.

Do I recommend it for kids? No. But this game is too stylish to be ignored because of stupid ESRB violators. It will certainly get an M or better (if that’s possible), so only those that are allowed to buy the game should play it. No getting mad at this, Fox News.

Waggle the Wii remote, press A and use the control stick in order to pummel your way around the levels of MadWorld. I’ll say this about the controls: I didn’t notice them. That’s a good thing here. I’ve never been overwhelmingly impressed with controls for action style Wii games, it’s only been me thinking they were bad or unnoticeable. Me not noticing the controls for MadWorld means that they weren’t bad, in my opinion. I never once though, “this doesn’t work” or “why isn’t it working?” It just happened as I wanted it to, and that’s always a great sign.

MadWorld is looking brutal. I will be picking this up as soon as it comes out, which happens to be March 10th here in the states. It was damn fun and I recommend it to anyone looking for a highly stylized, adult experience on their Wii.
