The latest game to take advantage of stereoscopic 3-D will be none other than Activision and Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops. The 3-D enabled visual mode will be available out-of-box for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of Black Ops. The only requirement is that you own a 3-D enabled HDTV and a pair of active shutter 3-D glasses. 3-D mode will be a simple menu option which can be switched on or off without much effort.
“Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops. Aiming down the sights of your weapons, flying in helicopters, rappelling down mountains, and moving through highly detailed environments are just some of the awesome experiences you will have in 3D with Black Ops,” says Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch. “
Lamia added, “We made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies.”
This is big news for early adopters of 3-D TV technology, as it gives the gaming crowd their first major blockbuster release to support the tech (Avatar: The Game doesn’t count). And for those who haven’t yet invested in a 3-D TV, don’t worry, Call of Duty: Black Ops will still be playable in standard 2-D, looking as good as it always has.
Treyarch continues to surprise us with new additions to Black Ops. Keep it coming, boys.
Call of Duty: Black Ops releases November 9, 2010, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
