Han Solo attempting to fly the Millennium Falcon without Chewbacca. Indy sans Short Round for the Shanghai getaway. Hall without Oates?! Ok, we’ll stop there, you get the point. A hero’s sidekick can be just as important as the hero him/herself. This goes for all forms of entertainment--be it movies, comics or gaming. That’s why we are counting down the ten greatest video game sidekicks. Honoring the guys outside the limelight who aid the hero in getting there.

It might be just a box with a heart on it, but there are few moments in gaming as heart-breaking as when you are forced to throw your Companion Cube into the incinerator. That moment right there is a perfect display of the level of attachment one grows for the little cubed guy over the course of the physics puzzler, Portal. Not even the cake promised at the end of the maze could make us feel better about euthanizing our only friend by fiery damnation. RIP Companion Cube, we’ll meet again some day, and frolic we shall.
