'Project Needlemouse' is Sonic 4 in Downloadable Episodes

The saga continues from where Sonic & Knuckles left off

Finally, some definitive details about "Project Needlemouse," the much-hyped return to 2D Sonic platforming, have surfaced outside of the knowledge that only Sonic would be going on this adventure. Gamespot has the first official look at the title and some of the specifics may shock you. For one, the game is going to be distributed digitally as downloadable episodes. So don't go into your local Gamestop or Best Buy looking for the new Sonic title, you won't find it. Secondly, the game is officially Sonic the Hedgehog 4, picking up after the events of Sonic & Knuckles. And lastly, the game will be available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii this summer, with the PS3 and Wii versions getting motion controls (SIXAXIS for PS3).

So what's the shocker here? I would say the fact that this new game is a continuation of the previous Sonic titles comes out of left field, as the teasers for "Project Needlemouse" seemed to insinuate a franchise relaunch. Also, the game being downloadable episodes is not what I would have expected. A tactic to get a good bit of the game out the door to appease fans while more work is pumped out on the project, or a money pit strategy by Sega? You decide.

Either way, Gamespot has the first official trailer for the game that isn't a teaser. We've embedded it below, check it.
