Wii Sales Surpass Original NES

There is finally a new king amongst the ranks of Nintendo

It might have taken roughly a quarter of a century but the original Nintendo Entertainment System has been surpassed as Nintendo's best selling home console ever. The new champion? The Nintendo Wii.

Therefore, it's official: people love Wii Fit.

And if you're interested in the stats, president Satoru Iwata provided life-to-date numbers on Nintendo's new console at a company investor call last week. The Wii has moved 67.45 million untis around the world since its release in 2006. This is in comparison to the 67.45 million units worldwide that the original NES has distributed to date. To break this down, the Wii has moved the same amount of units in a four year period that the NES took 25 years to do. Pretty impressive stuff.

Also, in other Nintendo news, the Nintendo DS has become the best selling Nintendo product ever. The little handheld has sold 125.13 million units, passing the combined sum of the rest of the Gameboy family, which has sold 118.69 units.

"Needless to say, these are just two milestones of a larger journey in our efforts to reach the ultimate goal of bringing one home console for every household and one handheld for everyone," Iwata added. The investor meeting ended with Iwata levitating and floating out of the room...
