Recently there have been rumors that Mass Effect 2 would be getting downloadable content on day one of release. This is true. However, Bioware's plans for content are a bit more elaborate than occasional dropping DLC in gamer's laps.

Enter the "Cerberus Network."

The Cerberus Network is an in-game portal in Mass Effect 2 that will supply players access to the most up-to-date downloadable content and news. The Cerberus Network will be exclusively activated via a single-use unlock code that will come with retail and digital versions of the game worldwide. But what about those who buy the game second-hand down the line? Well, players who buy the game used can activate the Cerberus Network by purchasing a one-time fee activation code.

The Cerberus Network augments and extends the rich universe of Mass Effect 2,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “We’re thrilled to be able to reward loyal BioWare and Mass Effect fans with ongoing, high quality content and provide a direct channel for our players to dive deeper into the intriguing lore of Mass Effect.”

Now the first batch of DLC through the Cerberus Network will be available on launch day, January 26 in North America, and feature new missions and in-game items. Also, this first DLC pack will introduce Zaeed, a "rugged and deadly" gun-for-hire who is recruited to save mankind alongside the rest of Shepard's wild bunch. Look at him pointing with such vigor below.

Then shortly after launch a second DLC pack is scheduled to release (no official date yet) that will introduce the Hammerhead, a new hover vehicle to the Mass Effect universe. Also included in this second pack will be new armor (Cerberus Assault) and the M-22 Eviscerator Shotgun.

So there you have it, the Cerberus Network. Sounds pretty cool and free DLC is always appreciated. Let's hope Bioware sticks with it and gives Mass Effect 2 a lot of cool new additions far into the future.
