Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero 5

Seattle's grunge legend steps on stage

Legendary Nirvana frontman and alternative music icon Kurt Cobain has been officially announced to make an appearance in Guitar Hero 5. Cobain will join Santana, Shirley Manson of Garbage, Matt Bellamy of Muse, and Johnny Cash as in-game personalities for the game. And while this has been known for some time as screens have been plastered all over the web, Activision is now making the announcement official, including this vignette trailer for Cobain as an appetizer before September 1's meal arrives on store shelves.

Guitar Hero 5 will also feature "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a previously unreleased live recording of "Lithium" from the ten-times Platinum album Nevermind. “Kurt Cobain is one of the most recognizable frontmen in rock ‘n’ roll history and it’s an honor to have two of Nirvana’s masterpieces included in Guitar Hero 5,” said Tim Riley, Vice President of Music Affairs for Activision.  “This is the first time the original recording of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' has ever been licensed in an entertainment property and we’re thrilled to offer Guitar Hero fans exclusive access to the unreleased live version of ‘'Lithium.'”

Now while most fans of Cobain and Nirvana might scoff at this announcement, arguing that Kurt's inclusion in Guitar Hero 5 conflicts with every sensibility the man had about corporate music products, others will probably be psyched that one of rock's greatest musicians is making his way, for the first time ever, into a video game, and Guitar Hero 5 is that game.
