During the company’s Tokyo Game Show press conference last night, Sony announced that the PlayStation Vita will be hitting Japanese store shelves this year. The exact date you can expect to pick up your PS Vita in Japan: December 17, 2011.

Unfortunately, most of the Tokyo Game Show conference was aimed at the Japanese market (go figure), and therefore not a lot of details were provided for North American or European territories. However, we have been told before that the Vita will launch in these areas in 2012, so maybe the December launch in Japan is a good sign that we’ll be able to get our hands on the Vita sooner rather than later. Here’s hoping.

Along with the announcement of a Japanese release date, Sony also revealed the 26 launch games that will accompany the Vita to shelves in Japan. Here’s the complete list, courtesy of Game Informer.

  • @field
  • Army Corps of Hell
  • BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend
  • Browser Sangokushi Touch Battle
  • Dark Quest
  • Disgaea 3 Return
  • Dream Club Zero Portable
  • Dynasty Warriors Next
  • F1 2011
  • Fish On
  • Hot Shots Golf 6
  • Katamari Damacy No Vita
  • Lord of Apocalypse
  • Michael Jackson The Experience
  • Minna to Issho
  • Monster Radar
  • Nico Nico
  • Power Smash 4
  • Project NOELS (download only)
  • Ridge Racer
  • Sawari Ma Kuru
  • Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru
  • Shinobido 2
  • Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Yuusha no Kiroku

However, do take note that a good number of these games will probably never see the light of day in North America or Europe; but even still, 26 games set for launch is a solid number. There are also a few surprises tucked away in that list that will undoubtedly release in other territories. Games like Katamari Damacy No Vita and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, for example.

Now that the PS Vita has a “save the date” for Japan, let’s cross our fingers and hope Sony provides us with a North American and European launch date in the near future. Honestly, we’re sick of waiting. We want to know when we can get our hands on a portable version of Uncharted, dagnabbit!
