Sony has announced today that Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be the new cover athlete for MLB 12: The Show when the game launches on March 6, 2012 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Gonzalez, who is a four-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner and 2011 Silver Slugger Award winner, replaces Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer as the game’s cover athlete after Mauer served two consecutive years as the franchise’s poster boy.
Speaking as a Massachusetts native and Red Sox fan, I’m OK with this decision.
It’s also interesting to hear that MLB 12: The Show will definitely be hitting Sony’s upcoming portable system, the PS Vita; although, it shouldn’t come as much of a shock. Sony San Diego’s baseball franchise has been the go-to gaming series for a number of years now, so it makes sense that Sony would use it to help push Vita units. The Show also made appearances on the original PSP, which I’ve heard were pretty solid, portable versions of the franchise.
Unfortunately, for those still clinging on to their PS2s, MLB 12: The Show will be the first version of The Show that doesn’t make the transition to Sony’s antiquated home console. It’s PS3, Vita or bust, I’m afraid. For more information on MLB 12: The Show and Adrian Gonzalez, the PS Blog has your hook up.
