… plus some Xbox Live records in the process.

This should come as no surprise considering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set the opening day sales record across all forms of entertainment a little over a week ago, but it turns out they also crushed the five-day gross record as well, reports Activison today. Over the course of Modern Warfare 3’s first five days at retail, the game pulled in $775 million worldwide, exceeding last year’s Black Ops by $125 million and 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 by $225 million.

“With $775 million of sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in its first five days, Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard.

In addition, Modern Warfare 3 set some Xbox Live records as well, getting 3.3 million players to flock to the title on launch day, November 8th. Furthermore, those 3.3 million players logged a record-breaking 7 million hours into Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer that first day, which is a 19% increase over the hours logged into Black Ops' multiplayer on its release day in 2010. Does anyone go to work anymore?!

“As I have said all year, we have been singluarly focused on making a spectacular game for our fans, and nothing else,” said publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. “Our incredible teams at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games have done just that.

“I would also like to thank our incredible team for the pulling off the launch of the year, as well as our retail partners around the world. But most of all, I want to thank our fans. They are our toughest critics, and our biggest supporters, and none of this would be possible without them.”

While we bow to Call of Duty’s dominance over the video game industry, we still can’t help but wish for something more from the franchise. It’s about time for a change-up according to our review of the game (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer review), but these stats prove that isn’t the case for a lot of gamers.
