Max Payne 3 Multiplayer Revealed

Let the Gang War commence!

Yesterday, Rockstar Games detailed to IGN the new multiplayer mode coming to Max Payne 3. The mode is not unlike what 2K Marin attempted with BioShock 2, putting a heavy emphasis on story to play off the Max Payne experience's main component.

To achieve this focus on narrative, the multiplayer of Max Payne 3 will play out similar to how multiplayer is handled in Guerrilla Games’ Killzone series. However, the main difference is that matches won’t randomly switch from game-type to game-type like they do in Killzone, but will instead flow naturally to produce a narrative through line. For example, the first round could see players attempting to steal bags of cash (capture the flag), only to have the round end and the leading scorer become the target in a game of bounty for the next round.

“The narrative element of Max Payne 1 and 2, and what we’re doing with 3, is obviously very strong,” said lead multiplayer designer Charlie Bewsher while talking to IGN. “So when you start thinking about the multiplayer version of Payne I think you’ve got to address that part of the game. But there’s also a narrative unique to any multiplayer game, though – you sort of get this drama that unfolds.”

Rockstar is labeling this narrative-focused multiplayer “Gang War.” Round breaks will feature voice-overs by Max and motion comics will play to break down the action that just unfolded. The multiplayer of Max Payne 3 will also feature player perks that change the ebb and flow of the action. And, yes, Bullet Time makes an appearance.
