In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto let it slip that the company is planning a Super Mario for Wii U announcement at this year's E3 in June.
The reason you hear crickets right now is because this announcement seems obvious. Nintendo is planning to "reintroduce" the world to the Wii U at E3 this year, and what better way to do that than by supplementing the demonstration with the announcement of a new game starring the company's flagship character. Nintendo and Mario are peanut butter and jelly… or hookers and blow. Meaning: they go well together.
For a hot minute, many speculated that Miyamoto's comment was more a lost-in-translation-type-of-thing, with Miyamoto intending to discuss a new Mario for the 3DS. However, website Eurogamer received a confirmation from Nintendo this morning, announcing the company is planning something Mario related for the Wii U and that further details are to come.
"In a recent interview, Mr. Miyamoto confirmed that a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Wii U system will be shown at this year's E3 Expo," said the Nintendo representative. "We'll have more to announce about our plans for the E3 Expo at a later date."
Hold onto your butts. Mario is coming to the Wii U. Surprise!
