Dragon Age 3, Next Mass Effect Will Use Frostbite 3 Engine

BioWare’s two biggest franchises will be powered by DICE’s breathtaking tech.

Just yesterday, EA Games and DICE pulled back the curtain on Battlefield 4, a game that runs on the new ultra slick Frostbite 3 graphics engine. But it’s not the only game being developed at EA that takes advantage of the tech. Both the next Mass Effect and Dragon Age 3: Inquisition will use Frostbite 3 as well.

Aaryn Flynn, BioWare Montreal and Edmonton’s general manager, took to Twitter to clear the air, tweeting:

For everyone who's been asking after the #BF4 reveal, #DA3 and the next Mass Effect are also using Frostbite 3. It's awesome.

If you’re wondering why this is a big deal, give the 17-minute gameplay demo of Battlefield 4 a look below. While the gameplay itself is typical war shooter fair, the visuals are an entirely different beast. The game looks breathtaking. Now apply that kind of visual fidelity to the sci-fi and fantasy worlds of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, respectively. Nerd boners everywhere.

The next game in the Mass Effect series is still a ways off, but Dragon Age 3: Inquisition is expected to launch “late 2013.” That will make two Frostbite 3 powered games this holiday season – Battlefield 4 and Dragon Age 3
