Mass Effect 2 Review

A heavier focus on the shooter mechanics still makes for a satisfying sequel

Mass Effect 2 is a wolf in sheep's clothing. As most gamers know, Bioware is synonymous with making amazing role-playing games. And while Mass Effect 2 retains a lot of the elements that make for a classic Bioware RPG, the sequel puts a heavier emphasis on it's shooter mechanics, streamlining the RPG experience in order to keep gamers out of the menus and in the action with their finger on the trigger.

But even still, Mass Effect 2 is an awesome game.

You'll know that fact within the first five minutes. It's not worth spoiling, as you should definitely experience it for yourself, but it's truly an epic reintroduction to the Mass Effect universe. And things only pick up from there.

Mass Effect 2's strongest suit, as you can probably imagine, is its story-telling. The entire galaxy is alive, the character's you'll meet and group up with are all unique and interesting, and the overall narrative of Shephard and his rag-tag team of misfits saving the galaxy from the latest universal threat, The Collectors, is classic sci-fi stuff.

Speaking of the game's characters; with each new one you meet you'll find a new favorite. I remember being nervous about this game's setup because I thought an entire team made up of scum and assholes would make Mass Effect 2 "too x-treme," as if they were pulling the same thing Ubisoft did with the transition from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time to Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (I still can't stomach Godsmack, thanks Ubisoft!). Thankfully, that's not the case with Mass Effect 2. Bioware did a fantastic job making these quirky psychos relatable on multiple levels, quickly gaining your sympathies no matter how bat-shit insane they might seem.
