Conan: The barbarian game is just that.

So I just downloaded and finished the demo of Conan the Barbarian, and big surprise it is a very typical hack and slash. The demo starts out with a short video of Conan saving a beautiful island queen that soon employs your skills to help her free her men. The video gives you a first glimpse at graphics that honestly just feel dated and borderline last gen. It also includes some “amazing” dialogue like when the queen asks Conan to serve her and he says “I will service any women no problem.” Yeah it’s that bad.

After this quick intro you get into the game and learn how to fight: i.e. smash the X and Y button and watch Conan slice and dice people. The plus on this game is that one way or another you are guaranteed to see some really cool and really gory kills, at one point in the game you can actually lop of somebody’s head then throw the carcass on a steak and watch blood squirt from the body like a fountain.  After killing about fifteen people you move on and learn how to use objects, “Conan hold RB and push B button really fast” which is the basis for pretty much all level interaction.

Once you kill another fifty or so simpletons and save all of her men, you have to fight three of the higher ranked bad guys, this involves holding the block button until they are done attacking once they stop, smash the X button over and over, the Y button won’t even work because apparently they are just too fast for your heavy attack, this basically transforms the game into a turned based fighting game. Once you kill these three you get one more look at the “hot” queen in a short video where she explains that you must move on to help her free more of her men up the coast. End Demo. If you really enjoy the typical, mind numbing hack and slash gore games, then this is for you. If you prefer thinking just a little bit in your games then when this comes out later this month I would suggest a pass because it is, I have a free game rental coupon and there isn’t really a whole lot else on the shelves worthy, at best.

Final score 3/10
