Bio

Chimene "Chemmy" Mary Alcott may look like your average skier, but her grit and determination in the face of adversity it what separates her from the pack. Starting at the beginning, Chemmy was born on July 10, 1982 in Twickenham, London. A mere 18 months later on a family trip to France, she was already hitting the slopes for the first time. At age three, she was participating in her very first fun race, and by age eight, she was competing for real. By 1993, she had won her first major competition, Etoile D'Or French Village Ski Championship, and was named a member of the British Junior Alpine team soon after. From the time she was eleven until she was nineteen, she would spend her summers in New Zealand training in the antipodean winter.

Of course, while her determination to train was unmatched, injuries wound up almost cutting Chemmy's career short on numerous occasions. When she was twelve, a skiing accident left her with a broken neck. Luckily, she was able to have two of her vertebrae fused together in order to recover. In 2004, an injury to a ligament in her knee prevented Chemmy from competing in that season's Senior British National Alpine Ski Championship Titles. After the 2006 Olympics, while recovering from a foot surgery to remove bunionettes, she fell and re-broke her left foot from a previous injury. Finally, the night before the 2010 World Cup downhill race, she fractured her leg in two places in a crash while training, breaking it once more on the road to recovery.

Even through all of her misfortunes, Chemmy has never given up. Her injuries have not defined her, and while they have been plenty, they also pushed her harder. In fact, her achievements in the sport have greatly outweighed the missteps. Along with competing in the Winter Olympic Games in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014, she's taken numerous gold medals in all five disciplines at the Senior British National Alpine Ski Championship Titles, as well as becoming the first British female skier to reach the World Cup finals in 2007.
