Eliza Coupe is an American actress probably best known for her role on the series “Happy Endings.” She is set to star next in the USA Network pilot “Benched” as a corporate attorney who has a nervous breakdown and ends up working as a public defender.
Eliza Coupe grew up in New Hampshire and suffers from dyslexia. She is of French heritage. She described herself as a tomboy. “I was pretty brutally picked on for a while growing up. It was always the really pretty girls, the hot girls and then there was me. So I had to do something to get any sort of attention. I became like the ‘best friend’ to the guys.”
In 2003, she toured France playing a soldier in an all-female version of King Lear.
Eliza Coupe made a name for herself with her one-woman sketch show “The Patriots” which won her the breakout performer award in 2006 at HBO’s U.S. Comedy Festival (dailymail.co.uk). “It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I did five characters and each of them were about five minutes long.”
She earned an undergraduate degree from the California Institute of Arts. She has her State’s motto "Live Free or Die" tattooed on her arm, as well as a feather on the inside of her arm and clock gears on the backside of her arm.

She also performed as part of the Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre in New York along with “Happy Endings” co-star Casey Wilson. Her other roles include parts in “Royal Pains,” “Scrubs,” “Samantha Who?” and “Community,” among others. She has appeared on Funny or Die in “Frenemies.” Her role on “Scrubs” was only supposed to be a four-episode guest spot, but it grew into a regular, and nearly a spin-off.
For her role in the film “Shanghai Calling,” Eliza had to learn Chinese. She said, “I’m pretty fearless when it comes to roles…but I had no idea how hard Chinese is. I’m not a mathematical person and it’s a very mathematical language.”
In 2013, she was served with divorce papers from her husband since 2007, Randall Whittinghill. Around the same time, Eliza deleted her Twitter account. On Twitter she had admitted to a stalker-ish fondness for actor Michael Fassbender.
In real life, she says “I’d say I’m a pretty intense person….I really feel that I’m kind of every character that I’ve ever played; it’s just a part of me. And I am a bit of a control freak.”
Eliza Coupe resides in Los Angeles.
