Kara Tointon is an English television and film actress. She is best known for her role as Dawn Swann on the BBC soap opera, "EastEnders."
Kara Louise Tointon was born on August 5, 1983 in Basildon, Essex, England to parents carol and Ken. She is also the older sister to actress Hannah Tointon. (http://www.mandatory.com/girls/Hannah-Tointon/) Kara grew up in Leigh, Essex, England, attending St. Michael's School, Leigh, and St. Hilda's School, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex along the way. At age seven, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, and also took speech and drama lessons while in school.
Prior to her career in television, Kara began making a name for herself on the stage. Her first official acting role came in the form of the character of Birgita in The Sound of Music at the Cliffs Pavillion. After this, she starred as one of the children in a pantomime version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Bristol.
Of course, Kara's official career as a television actress came a bit later, when she was cast as Gina Molliano on the television series "Dream Team" in 1999. By 2001, she was cast in a lead role on the series "Teachers" before taking on the role of Gaby on "Harry and Cosh" the following year.
While Kara has made quite a name for herself as an actress over the years, her career was defined most by her role as Dawn Swann on the popular BBC soap opera, "EastEnders," a character she wound up playing for four years. After this, she once again made waves in 2010 after winning the BBC dance competition series, "Strictly Come Dancing," along with partner, professional dancer, and eventual long-term boyfriend, Artem Chigvintsev. The two wound up taking first place after defeating 14 other celebrities during the show's eighth season.
