Lake Bell was born and raised in New York City in 1979 to an owner of a New York design firm, her Protestant mother, Robin Bell, and a real estate developer, her Jewish father, Harvey Siegel.
Bell attended college in New York, then went abroad to study theater at Rose Bruford College in London where she performed in several productions. Shortly after finishing, she returned to the states to begin her career as an actor.
In 2002, Lake's very steady acting career began with her first role in Speakeasy and a couple guest appearances on the hit hospital drama ER. Her first big break came shortly after in 2003 as she was cast to costar with Jeff Goldblum in an NBC film, War Stories, and in the NBC comedy series, Miss Match, alongside Alicia Silverstone.
In 2004, Bell appeared in the final episodes of The Practice as a character who would be part of a spinoff called Boston Legal, whom she continued the role of as a series regular beginning in 2005 and would guest star as through 2006.

Bell saw her busiest year to date in 2008 when she took the lead in the film, Under Still Waters, winning Outstanding Performance at the Newport Beach Film Festival, costarred in Over Her Dead Body with Paul Rudd and Eva Longoria, played supporting actress to Cameron Diaz in What Happens in Vegas and supporting role to Colin Farrell in Pride and Glory. That year she also began dating Farrell after playing his wife in the movie.
In 2009 and 2010, Lake took a handful of small roles in popular films including It's Complicated as Alec Baldwin's wife, alongside Meryl Streep, and the voiceover for the fourth Shrek film, Shrek Forever After.
Later that year, Bell made her writing and directing debut in a short film, Worst Enemy, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and an won award for best screenwriting.
And 2011 was another big year for Bell, landing a lead in the thriller, Little Murder, costarring with Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher in the rom-com No Strings Attached, picking up a role in the comedy A Good Ole Fashioned Orgy, guest starring in the Zooey Deschanel sitcom, New Girl, and landing lead in a thriller across from Kate Bosworth.
She also did photo spreads for the magazines Elle, Esquire, Maxim and Los Angeles in 2011.
In 2012, Bell is engaged to her costar from the cancelled 2010-11 HBO series, Scott Campbell, and began work on her first full-length feature.
