Marlo Meekins is many things: a cartoonist, caricaturist, model, actor and comedian. She’s probably best known for her work on Vine. She said, “Vine is great because it combines everything I’m interested in. I love making stuff so much, and I love drawing. I actually storyboard my Vines, a lot of them.” She has over 500,000 Vine followers.
Growing up, Marlo Meekins loved Mad Magazine. She began her career when she was a teenager as a caricature artist. But her warped sensibility often offended the subjects she drew. “I’ve gotten like death threats, and I was called a ‘c*nt’ like a thousand times” (huffintongpost.com).
In 2003, she earned a Bachelors Degree in Illustration from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Around 2006, the work from her blog began to grab attention and was featured in Zoo Weekly in Australia and G4’s “Attack of the Show.” She won the Silver Nosey Award for Caricaturist of the Year in 2009.
Marlo Meekins became a model after fashion photographers contacted her through her MySpace. “I realized my elongated/waif-like guise was indeed model-y and I established this undemanding side-gig which is filled with vanity, laughs and merriment.”
As for art, Marlo Meekins said, “My imagination has always been a safe haven, which is why I regularly smear my paint around to resemble my memories.” She described her desire to create art as “sort of like an addiction.” She added, “I just need to make something or I feel sick to my stomach.” She dreamed of being an actor, but didn’t feel confident enough to succeed. She used to work with Spumco, the animation studio of “Ren and Stimpy” fame. She said about the animation world, “…just watching my friends work so hard and hardly get any credit or recognition, you know…”
Marlo Meekins said she initially sought to “breed reptiles and amphibians for science as a Herpetologist.”
She said in an interview that she wants what everyone wants: “security, good health and good company. I have a bunch of side hobbies that I want to continue, like making dog clothes for dogs that are always cold, as well as making puppets and stuff.”
As for her popularity, Marlo Meekins said, “I love it. It’s weird. It’s f*cking weird as hell…it just feels like ‘The Truman Show’ or something.”
In 2013, she was part of Comedy Central’s first online comedy festival. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she said, “I’m being it.” Marlo Meekins resides in Los Angeles.
