Growing up, she said, “I used to be the girl who hiked her knickers up under the towel in the changing room.” She added, though, “I could be daring under someone else’s skin.” When she was 16, she starred in a school play and Julian Fellowes was in the audience. With his assistance, she had the good fortune of being cast in the BBC production of “The Prince and the Pauper” in 1996. Other roles followed, including parts in "Big Women,” “Oliver Twist” and “Mansfield Park.”
Sophia Myles was going to study Philosophy at Cambridge University but dropped out to pursue acting instead. She said of her decision, “I can either go and sit in a classroom and study Jane Austen or Harold Pinter plays, or I can make ‘Mansfield Park’ and work with Harold Pinter and be paid to do it.” More roles followed.
Sophia Myles joked about herself that she’s been “Britain’s next big thing for the past ten years.” She was known for sometimes carrying things that have been written about her in the press. “There is stuff that’s invited and there’s stuff that’s not. I’ve chosen not to talk about my private life to the press…I think once you start revealing the private stuff, you’re essentially fair game.”
Of her career, she said, “I was often the wronged young maiden and now I’m the kickass bitch.”
She said, “I sometimes think that if someone spoke to me the way I speak to myself, I would kick them. I’ve always been really ambitious, whatever I do. At school, I always wanted to be the best in the class – no, it wasn’t enough to be the best in the class, I’d want to be the best in the country.”
Aside from acting, Sophia Myles enjoys horse riding, skiing, skating and swimming. When not acting, she said she’s “quite a homebody.” She has been romantically involved with actor David Tennant and Charles Dance (who was 34 years her senior). Sophia Myles is currently single and resides in London.
