Ill Rated Editor and Street Art Specialist, Dominic Saldana recently got a chance to talk to the artist known as Buff Monster.
CraveOnline: Please introduce yourself? Describe your art for the CraveOnline Community?
Buff Monster: My name is Buff Monster. I make fun art inspired by Heavy Metal music, ice cream, Kaiju, Japanese cute culture and the naked female body.
CraveOnline: Fill us in on how your icon/character manifested, what is the symbolism behind “Buff Monster”?
Buff Monster: It is only with a big dose of Heavy Metal that I can channel the Buff Monster spirit. Buff Monsters come from a happy world called Lollipop Land, full of ice cream, fun and adventure. There are mounds of ice cream piled high and an abundance of squirting breasts and clouds; “Pink is Power” is the foundation of Lollipop Land.
CraveOnline: I tend to see the Buff Monster character morph in appearance from time to time. I see BM’s with: Breast, Ice Cream, Nipples, Cherries, and even a Labia, what are your motives behind these transformations? Anything at all, or you just looking to push the limit?
Buff Monster: I just channel the Buff Monster spirit and this is what comes out. It’s so much fun.
CraveOnline: Moving from Hawaii to Los Angeles (for college), and now based in Los Angeles, how much influence does this city have on your work?
Buff Monster: I actually live in Hollywood, which is a subtle but important detail. Hollywood as a place and as a cultural idea is unique. It’s history is based in the movies, an industry based on image, glamour and fantasy but the contemporary physical city is anything but glamorous. That is, unless you’re going to a cheesy club on Sunset. Hollywood is a wonderful example of how everything is made up, even our own “reality.”
CraveOnline: Does your background in the porn industry have influence in the madness?
Buff Monster: That sounds so scandalous.

CraveOnline: Sometime ago I saw a shoot where hot ass girls had Buff Monster art all over their naked bodies. What’s up with all the chicks lovin’ Buff Monster and how much ass do you pull dude?
Buff Monster: Sometimes my job demands that I paint naked girls and that’s fun. I work really hard, but there are perks. Literally.
CraveOnline: You use a lot of the color Pink in your artwork, and have seemed to adopted the term “Pink is Power”, why pink and why the term?
Buff Monster: That’s a gift from Lollipop Land. Pink is an amazing powerful color. Now, I’m asking the reader to consider the color from a cultural and political perspective. It’s obviously the color of cute, but there is so much more to it. There is certainly nothing submissive about the specific shade that I use. Pink is such an important part of my work that it would be impossible to use another color.
CraveOnline: How has the transition been from street artist, gallery artist, clothing design, to now your own lines of custom Vinyl Toy Art?
Buff Monster: Its really just a matter of producing work for people to enjoy. The transition is more a broadening of audience and distribution.
CraveOnline: We went to the “Buff Fest” recently for your toy pre-release and signing party in Hollywood, Ca. There were hundreds of people lining up of all ages trying to get their hands on these limited edition BM toys. How big is that for you to be socially recognized as a true “Vinyl Toy” artist, and how was your experience at Comic Con 2007 for the actual release?
Buff Monster: I didn’t know that I was a “true vinyl toy artist.” I never got the email. But, yes, Buff Fest was crazy. We had a lot of people come out to get the toys. I like that people relate to what I do and that it makes them happy. My biggest collectors have find such great joy in the work that I produce.
CraveOnline: Can you fill us in on some of the current projects you have on deck?
Buff Monster: Working on a brand new website. Over Xmas last year I tore down my nice website and its been pretty bleak ever since. That was my intention, and now its time for a new site. It’s in the works as I write this and will be live in the next month or two. Got lots of new toys and wallets and bags and all that fun stuff coming out soon. Working day and night on a Buff Monster book.

CraveOnline: Can we look forward to some Buff Monster animation one day?
Buff Monster: Yes, “one day.”
CraveOnline: Any last words?
