Pam Anderson of “Baywatch” fame has been known for many things, and probably the tamest on that list is her strong support of animal rights. She’s a vegetarian as well as a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), and gained a lot of attention when she protested against Kentucky Fried Chicken in 2001 and again in ‘06. She’s the spokesperson of the American Liver Foundation and MAC Cosmetics’ MAC AIDS Fund as well.
And now, this blonde bombshell is taking on the annual harp seal hunt that takes part along the Canadian eastern seaboard every spring (300,000 animals are killed). During Toronto Fashion Week, Anderson made an appearance outside the Ontario legislature building with a baby seal mascot to promote her latest PETA ad campaign. Showing off the ad in which she appears, it reads, “What do I have in common with Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and the Dalai Lama? We all oppose the massacre of baby seals. It's time to end Canada's shameful slaughter." Celebs who are also taking part in the campaign include singers Sarah McLachlan and Kelly Osborne as well as Jennie Garth (“90210”) and blogger Perez Hilton.
Anderson recently told the Associated Press, “When I travel all over the world, the Canadian seal hunt is a huge issue that people talk to me about. So I'm trying to save some embarrassment."
The Canadian government frowned on Anderson’s “disappointing” comments, and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Gail Shea said to the AP, “Hollywood celebrities are not going to dictate policy in Canada because we make decisions that are based on science and consultation with Canadians.”
The ads will run in entertainment magazines and online in the coming weeks, and continue to run throughout the winter months.
