The Motorola Verizon DROID
The Motorola Verizon DROID
Motorola's new Android 2.0 smartphone, the 'Droid'.

If you go to DROIDDoes.com, you’ll likely enjoy the intro – especially if you’re not a fan of the Apple iPhone – which uses the overly ubiquitous “i(fill in product name)” to good effect, naming off all the things that the iPhone can’t do. The end of the intro boldly states, “Everything iDon’t… DROIDDOES.” While it’s a short list of don’ts (one that includes, I don’t: run simultaneous apps, customize, use widgets, take night shots, allow open development, have interchangeable batteries, have a real keyboard), it’s mostly significant

The Motorola DROID, which is available on November 6, promises to be everything you could want in a smartphone. Its platform is Android 2.0, Google is behind the interfaces, and it’s Wi-Fi and 3G connected with stereo Bluetooth technology. The DROID also features Gmail and Exchange integration with your address book and calendar as well as social networking integration with Facebook’s address book and the Facebook widget. Since Google is partnered with the DROID, it has released a massive range of new applications, including new Google Maps that give you turn-by-turn directions. What’s even cooler is that you perform Google searches by speaking at the phone, such as saying “pizza” and getting a list of nearby pizza joints and directions – I’m pretty sure the DROID will also help you find hot, single women too.

Although the DROID is a full QWERTY slider with a tangible keyboard, the 3.7” screen also features a virtual keyboard. There’s also voice dialing, advanced speech recognition, and Verizon Visual Voice Mail – on the next-gen DROID, we’d like to be able to hold an engaging conversation with it, thank you very much.

Other GPS and location services on offer are aGPS, sGPS, Maps Navigation, Google Latitude, Google Street View, and, last but not least, eCompass.

As mentioned, the DROID features a 3.7” screen, which is a haptic WVGA (480x854). There’s also a substantial 5.0 MP camera capable of DVD-quality video capture (720x480) at 24 fps and 30fps at playback. Another spectacularly intuitive inclusion by Verizon on the DROID is the YouTube widget that allows you to launch right into the video camera and then to immediately upload and share your video. The camera also offers a number of great features, such as image stabilization, real-time color effects, a dual LED flash, AF, and some editing tools along with Geo Tagging.

The Motorola DROID is such a fantastic phone that offers so much that it’s impossible to include everything about it here, though I really want to. But to sum it up, it meets just about anybody’s needs, from being a social (MMS, SMS) and media phone (music, video, internet, GPS) to being a business phone capable of conference calls and possessing Microsoft Office.

Before I completely forget, however, the usage time is decent at 385 minutes, size and weight are average, and there’s 16GB of memory on the pre-installed micorSD card and is expandable up to 32GB.

Yeah, and pricing is set at $199.99 with a two-year plan.

And one last thing, there are two pretty cool and optional docking stations available. One is a multi-media station that functions as an alarm clock, music player, and digital picture frame, while offering weather updates. The other is a navigation dock (place the DROID in it and it auto converts to a GPS device with voice command and 3-D navigation).

See, I can’t stop.
