There seems to be an app for everything these days, and we knew it wouldn’t take long for Netflix to jump on the iStore bandwagon – their new app for iPhone and iPod was launched last week and can be streamed over Wi-Fi and 3G networks.
The app is free for Netflix subscribers, which carries a low price of $8.99 a month, however a free 30-day trial is available (check out www.itunes.com/appstore/ for more info).
While many critics have agreed that watching a flick on the modest screen of an iPhone or iPod isn’t very practical, many have also consented that it’s a great added feature for iPad owners. “Apple has changed the game for mobile devices," said Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and chief executive officer, in an official press release. "We're excited that our members can now carry Netflix around in their pockets and instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix right to their iPhone or iPod touch."
It’s a big move in the rat race between Netflix and its competitors – Blockbuster, Redbox and Hulu, as the company’s stock rose almost two per cent after the unveiling of the app (on Thursday, the day of the launch, shares were up 1.7 per cent to $126.33 in afternoon trade). Netflix has become an extremely popular service – it is currently the world's largest subscription service for movies and TV shows, with 15 million members who enjoy unlimited “rentals” with no late fees.
Now Android users are waiting with bated breath (and publicly ranting on Twitter), hoping for their own version of the Netflix app.
