The Twitter for iPhone app has finally been released. After Twitter bought out the Tweetie developer Atebits this past April, the renamed “Twitter for iPhone” in its 3.0 version was unveiled at Google I/O (so was Twitter for iPad Touch apps) on May 19th. The application can easily be downloaded by any iPhone user for free from iTunes, even if they don’t have a Twitter account (it used to cost around $3). Twitter for iPhone is the rebranded name for “Tweetie 2.”

Rather than come up with their own Twitter application, Tweetie was already considered the best iPhone app for the social networking site, which was why Twitter bought the company instead of developing their own app (which is what they did for BlackBerry and Android). This is the third major mobile application release for Twitter.

Some of the features of the new app include: reorganized search options where users can now search all tweets and find users in the same spot as well as view Browse Suggested users and Top Tweets; popular commands like RTs have their own place now in the main actions bar; changes were made to tweet rendering so that they match Twitter.com tweets; and iPhone users will have ease of usability by seeing Top Tweets, reading public Tweets and finding users at no charge. The app also has a new redesigned icon.

The two-day Google I/O conference saw more than three thousand new product unveilings and announcements, including the new Twitter for iPhone as well as Google TV.
