Google’s biggest developer conference, the two-day Google I/O, is starting today, bringing together over 5,000 developers under one roof. There will be more than 100 demonstrations from developers showcasing their technologies and 80 informational sessions, and industry experts are all a-flutter about what Google will reveal at the event.
Although a specific agenda has not been released, technical content will include Android, Google Chrome, Google APIs, GWT, App Engine, open web technologies, and more. Many are speculating that Google will update its mobile, television and communications initiatives, proving that the company is moving beyond online business practices. CNET predicted: “We believe that Wednesday's event will focus heavily on Web development and Google applications, while Thursday will focus on mobile technologies.” According to San Francisco Chronicle writer James Temple, “Analysts believe the company will officially announce a television platform based on its Android software, developed in partnership with Intel Corp., Sony Corp. and Logitech International... Google is also expected to show off the latest version of its Android operating system, which is rumoured to include the ability to use smart phones as wireless modems for personal computers.”
"They're kind of underachievers in terms of cultivating a developer ecosystem," Gartner research Vice President Ray Valdes said. "So there's a need to reach out to developers outside of Google and get them to develop applications for that platform, and to educate them, evangelize them and support them."
The event takes place at the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco starting at 9am PST this morning with the keynote speech. This is the third I/O conference Google has hosted.
