You have a portable USB hard drive upon which is loaded all of those home videos you shot at your recent party plus a few feature films which somehow found themselves being ripped off DVDs. You seek a way to play these videos in HD quality on your home entertainment system. Enter the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player.

The WD TV HD Media Player is designed to work USB drives as well as "digital cameras, camcorders, and portable media players that can be recognized as mass storage devices." The Player lacks its own storage and lets you connect up to two compatible USB devices at one time.

One can access through the WD TV a variety of popular music, photo and video file formats. A special on-screen navigation function, viewable through your television display, lets you browse by thumbnails of available digital images or filenames. You can also search or browse this content via a "Media Library" option which displays "all your media by media type in one menu regardless of its location in folders or drives." You can view all of this content by categories such as genre, album, artist and date.

HDMI and composite video connections let you view content in up to 1080p. Options exist for controlling specific media types, including zoom in on digital photos, fast forwarding digital video and shuffle digital audio playback. An included remote lets you handle all of this without having to get up.

Other features of this WD product include media conversion software and an included composite cable. Power is provided via an AC adapter.
