AMD finally wins one against Intel

After being beaten black and blue the past couple of years by Intel, AMD appears to have finally won one over rival Intel, but the results may surprise you.

The battle was announced when Intel launched their new low-power Atom chips, designed to be as energy inefficient as possible and be used in consumer electronic devices such as laptops and budget UMPCs. AMD answered the challenge by undercloaking their Athlon 64 down to 1GHz and pairing it with their ATX motherboard.

The fight between a 1.6GHz Atom and an undercloaked 1GHz Athlon 64 gave the performance win to AMD. Although slower cloaked than the Atom, it manages to beat it in terms of performance due to the efficient architecture of the Athlon 64. Furthermore, the AMD chip consumer even LESS power than the Atom, which surprised many. The problem here is that Intel used a very energy inefficient motherboard leading to the problem.

AMD hasn’t announced publically an alternative to the Atom, largely because they have so many problems with trying to get their high performance chips to manufacture correctly. However, if they can shrink down their ATX motherboard to a form factor comparable to the Atom and relaunch the lower cloaked Athlon 64, Intel will be facing problems. source
