First Law of Motorcycles is...

... Everyone lays down the bike. Sooner or later, everyone who swings one leg over a motorcycle seat is going to lay it down.

They may roll it, smack it, get smacked, slide, skid, do an "Endo," or otherwise get in some kind of accident where they will wind up no longer seated proudly upright. This is the law. Back in the way back, when I was a bartender, before the days of "RUBS," [Rich Urban Bikers] this law was propounded, if not pounded into me by more than a few colorful characters. Take, for example, One-Armed Dennis. This guy is literally the guy who could kick your butt with one arm tied behind his back. Except he didn't have to go through that formality because one of his arms had gotten ripped off in a motorcycle accident. I got to know him because we worked together. He was the bouncer. There were plenty others, but you get the idea. Everyone who rides a bike is going to lay it down, sooner or later. This screed was prompted by this article in USA TODAY, that details a sharp rise in motorcycle fatalities. And that the new highway bill has $3 million set aside to "study" the cause behind the rise. The answer is in the article -- 734,000 people bought new bikes last years, more than triple the number of a decade before. Bikes are bigger and more powerful than ever before, and more recreational riders and weekend RUBS are driving them. That is, people with more spare cash than common sense, or even motorcycle experience.
