Before you get your knickers in a twist, no, JK Rowling isn't writing an Adult novel, so don't expect 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Boner' hitting book shelves any time soon.
What she is writing, however, is a novel 'for adults', which means that she is drawing a line under her tales of adolescent wizards with disfigured foreheads and stepping in a direction that you middle-aged folk can enjoy (not that you didn't enjoy Happy Potter anyway – c'mon, admit it).
According to a report in The Guardian, Rowling said of the announcement: "Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher.
"I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."
Rowling is keeping further details of the new novel close to her chest, with publishers Little, Brown doing the same. When a spokesperson for the publisher was asked to comment, they refused to let anything slip. Further announcements concerning the novel are expected later in the year, with Rowling's statement that she is entering a "new phase" of her career indicating that we should expect more adult books along the way.
