It may seem like an unlikely match, but K'naan recently announced that his life story will be the subject of a new children's book.
Tundra Books, who will publish the title, says it will release "When I Get Older: The Story Behind 'Wavin' Flag'" in Canada and the U.S. in both hardcover as well as an ebook on September 25th.
"I think of empathy as a muscle in the soul, which develops through the nutrition we provide for it. The stories we hear as children can be that nutrition,” K’naan said in a press statement (as reported by The Canadian Press). “I wanted to write a children's story that reflects the new immigrant's sense of family and identity, which can sometimes be lost in translation. In this book, the main character is 'Wavin' Flag,' a song whose ownership has been long claimed by children all over the world."
K'naan, who has won three Juno Awards, is the father of two boys. In addition to being a musician he is also a songwriter, poet, and instrumentalist. The song "Wavin' Flag" was the official song of the FIFA World Cup in 2010 chosen by their main sponsor, Coca-Cola.
The new book will be 32 pages and printed in full-colour, and is geared toward kids who are between the ages of 7 and 10 (similar to his own children's ages).
